4 Day Luxury Small Group WWI Battlefield Weekend Tour

This three-day introductory tour allows visitors to see the major areas of British and Commonwealth involvement across the Western Front. All the major Commonwealth countries including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and India, together with Great Britain played major roles in ensuring ultimate victory.  Importantly, the tour offers flexibility to ensure that visitors from all countries will see the memorials to their country’s fallen, as well as gaining a greater understanding of the overall conduct and strategy of the war.

Day by day

First Day welcome to Lille

Arrive at your pre-tour accommodation in Lille and enjoy the rest of your day at leisure.

Second Day we visit The Somme then Villers-Bretonneux then head to Ypres

Our tour begins at The Somme.At the Newfoundland Memorial Park at Beaumont Hamel, we make out the original trench line. The Ulster Tower memorial to the 36th (Ulster) Division makes a peaceful stopping point, before we visit Pozièresand the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux. We end a moving first day at the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing. (D)

Third Day tour Ypres Salient then return to Ypres 

Surrounding the ancient town of Ypres are the Salient battlefields. Here we see John McCrae’s Dressing Station at Essex Farm Cemetery. And we visit battlegrounds including Messines Ridge, Hooge Crater,Polygon Wood and Tyne Cot Military Cemetery. We walk the shell-scarred craters of the Hill 60 battlefield. We see dozens of memorials to Commonwealth regiments and their units. Then as the sun sets, we contemplate the haunting sound of the Last Post ceremony. (B)

Fourth Day travel to Fromelles then Vimy Ridge and finally Lille

Starting at Fromelles, we explore Pheasant Wood Cemetery.Crossing the Loos battlefield,we continue to the Canadian Memorial Park at Vimy Ridge to tour its trenches. And before our long weekend finishes, we pause for thought at the Vimy Memorial that commemorates the thousands of soldiers whose final resting places have never been found. (B)
