Fourth Day its onto Wurzburg then back to Rothenburg
Welcome to Wurzburg: the place where many visitors decide to start their tour of the Romantic Road route through the far south of Germany. The city itself is nestled in a beautiful hilly spot on a river, and boasts a wealth of history. It is also smack in the middle of one of Germany's biggest wine producing areas, so indulge in some Franconian wine sampling at the exceptional Wurzburg Residence state cellars after touring the grandiose palace itself. Once you have sufficiently examined every nook and cranny of the property, we head back to Rothenburg in the afternoon. (B)

Fifth Day travel to Dinkelsbuhl, Harburg castle then to Augsburg
Continuing our journey on the aptly-named Romantic Road, we make a stop at historic Dinkelsbuhl, one of the particularly striking towns on the northern part of the route. Dinkelsbuhl is a typically German-looking town with a host of attractions, so be sure to take it all in before we make tracks. Next stop is Harburg Castle, one of the oldest and best-preserved medieval castles in Germany. Perched high on a hill overlooking the town for which it is named, the castle is believed by historians to have been built in the 10th and 11th centuries. Finally, we reach Augsburg, the third largest city in Bavaria and home to the imposing Town Hall, said to be the most significant secular Renaissance building north of the Alps. (B, D)

Sixth day journey to Landsberg Am Lech, Wieskirche and Fussen
After saying our goodbye to Augsburg, we carry on the Romantic Road to Landsberg – a charming little town with the river Lech forming an important part of its history and the foreground for the most scenic view of the Old Town. We continue our tour on the meandering route and pay a visit to a pilgrims' church, the Wieskirche, and be enamoured by its elaborate Rococo architecture, before reaching the climax of the Romantic Road: Fussen. Nestled at the foot of the Alps, Fussen is the perfect place to test your fitness levels with a gentle hike, or alternatively, relax in a local restaurant and relish a traditional Bavarian meal. So good, you will be hankering for more. (B)
